Our first Primeboots ambassador is Sofia Tufvasson a Swedish ceramicist who likes to play with surface, structure and shadow.
How did you get into ceramics?
I took a ceramics course in Australia in 1993 and since then clay has been a part of my life more or less. I have an education as a graphic designer so I have been working a lot with 2-dimensional forms but a couple of years ago I switched and now I work full-time with my ceramics.
What inspires you and why?
Everyday life, nature, patterns, and forms. I find new ideas in anything. I just need a form and a sketchbook and then it's back to the studio for try outs.
How would you describe your sense of style?
Often quite graphic and I like to treat the clay like if it was another material. Often I try to achieve a textile feeling in my work. I want to awaken peoples curiosity and will to touch the object.
Striving for the objects to be able to stand alone and be beautiful by its self even when not used for its purpose. Like a vase without flowers transforms into a sculpture in its own right.
What is your daily routine?
I like ”TO DO lists” so I often have a plan of what has to be done during the week. With a family of 6, structure is a must and I work very effectively while I’m in my studio.
What does craftsmanship mean to you whether it be within the fashion or art world?
I know how much love, thought and time it takes to create unique objects or products. I admire the strength and courage of those that believe in an idea and the way of living and working as an artist and entrepreneur.
Who most inspires you within your artistic field?
I don’t look at other ceramics in that way. I do admire other ceramists but if I want to be inspired I look at art, fashion or architecture or just patterns and forms anywhere as well as in natures natural patterns.
What would be your advice to women starting out within your field?
I think it’s important to find your own way of expressing your self through the material and find your personal touch. Do what you believe in and not what you think that people want.
What motivates you to keep your work evolving?
I love working with clay and it feels like I have endless ideas in my sketchbook. Of course it's inspiring to get positive feedback from customers, galleries and magazines.
What is your favourite Primeboots style and why?
I have a pair of the Florence boots in black, they work for me in every situation which I like whether it be with a dress at a gallery or with my jeans and a t-shirt in the studio. They are classic and with a feel of genuine boot making. Of course the quality is also a big factor.
